Two tries from Josh Leeks helps H&D secure win on final day, as Ben Smith makes debut for 1st XV.

In an end-to-end game on the final day of league fixtures, Harwich & Dovercourt emerged victorious against South Woodham Ferrers, 31-43. The visitors entered the match aiming to extend their winning streak, having remained unbeaten since the start of the year. Special mention to Ben Smith making his debut at fullback.

The game kicked off with South Woodham Ferrers drawing first blood, scoring a try through their winger after ten minutes. However, Harwich & Dovercourt quickly responded with a try from Josh Leeks. Injury to Cameron Clark saw Ryan Pitham introduced to the match, making his return to the team after a twelve-months

The first half remained tightly contested, with both sides exchanging blows and scoring three tries each. Adam Eldridge and Andrew Sterry showcased their attacking prowess by crossing the try line, but it was the home side who held a narrow 19-17 lead heading into halftime.

Harwich & Dovercourt displayed resilience and determination in the second half. Adam Palmer and Rob Kemp noticeably stepping up to the occasion. Despite challenging weather conditions, H&D continued to play an expansive game, outmaneuvering the tiring opposition, in very muddy conditions. Four second-half tries from the visitors, including debutant Ben Smith, Nemani Ledua, Jack Dallen, and Josh Leeks sealed the victory for the visitors, who finished with a score of 43-31. Lewis Williams kicking four conversions.

Debutant Ben Smith was named the Man of the Match for his performance at Full Back, which included a try on debut and a constant threat in attack. With this bonus point win, Harwich & Dovercourt secured second place in the Counties 2 Essex (North) league standings. Their focus now shifts to cup rugby when they travel to London to face Kings Cross Steelers on Saturday, 9th March.
