Harwich & Dovercourt 1st XV hosted Writtle Wanderers in this Counties 2 Essex North fixture. After narrowly winning their opening two fixtures, H&D were looking for a more convincing performance against Writtle, who were also unbeaten. Special mention to eighteen-year-old, Flynn Garwood, making his 1st XV debut.

After a close opening ten minutes, which saw both teams trading blows. It was H&D who opened the scoring when flanker, Zach Keeley charged down a kick as Writtle tried to clear their lines. Scrum half Tom Kite was the quickest to react to the loose ball and score in the corner. 5-0

Ben Moore extended the home side’s lead ten minutes later. An excellent individual try saw Moore evade several defenders on his way to the try line. 10-0.

Moore then turned provider as he kicked the ball over the last defender for winger Andrew Sterry to outpace the chasing defence and score in the corner. Lewis Williams converted the kick. 17-0.

Keeley and Ledua came close to the extending the lead before half time, but a resilient Writtle defence held out.

The second half continued in a similar fashion. H&D worked tirelessly in defence to stop Writtle crossing the try line and when in possession the home side looked to attack with real intent.

Nemani Ledua, playing at flanker, then picked up two tries in succession, earning H&D a try scoring bonus point. 27-0.

With a few minutes left of the clock, Ben Moore scored the final try of the afternoon. A long pass to Moore, saw him glide around the outside of the Writtle defence. With one defender to beat, Moore kicked the ball into the dead ball area, to then score in the corner.

Final score Harwich & Dovercourt 32 - 0 Writtle Wanderers. Man of the Match was awarded to Cameron Clark.

H&D now have a rest week, before travelling to Burnham-on-crouch on 4th November.
