The first road trip of the year saw Harwich travelling down the A12 to fellow Essex side Romford Ravens. With the sun beating down relentlessly all day both sides played some good rugby.

Report by Tim Flatt

After a stalemate for the first 15 minutes Harwich Owls put the first points on the board, a solid scrum saw Mimi Montgomery pick up and burst down the blind side, Romford were penalised at the concluding breakdown.
After an injury delay Harwich tapped the penalty and a strong Montgomery run saw her offload to Yas Amber to round the Romford winger to score in the corner, the conversion missed for a 0-5 Owl lead.
Romford looked as if they would answer the Harwich score when they made a strong run on The Owls right wing only to be thwarted by try saving tackles from Mimi Montgomery and Lillie Barnett in succession.
Harwich missed two opportunities to extend their lead after a good surging run from Lauren Richardson saw her pass to Lauren Fee just miss as she was bundled into touch.
Almost straight after Richardson again made the break, passed to Montgomery but her pass to winger Fee was adjudged to have travelled forwards to cancel the try.
Harwich doubled their lead shortly before halftime when number 8 Montgomery picked up from the base of the dominant Owl scrum to again attack the blindside, superb support lines saw Montgomery offload to Yas Amber who in turn popped the ball back to Montgomery and with the Ravens defence all at sea Genevieve Croll took the pass from Montgomery at speed to drive over the try line for her first club try, a missed conversion left the half time score 0-10 to The Owls.
Harwich started the second half on the front foot, with the scrum creating havoc all day the other forwards forte came to play when Sophia Tricker stole a Raven line out, quick ball from Holly Cuozzo found a rampaging Carmel Leak who smashed through the Raven defence and sprint 40m to score next to the posts despite would be covering tacklers trying to stop her, Mim Pearson converted for the extras and a 0-17 Owl lead.
With Harwich playing good offloading rugby gaps were appearing in The Raven defence, Carmel Leak made another clean break but the speed of the break caught out the would be Owl support to see the ball turned over by Romford, they mauled the ball into the Harwich half and when The Owls were penalised for joining the maul from the side, the tap penalty found The Owl defence flat footed and centre Amy Wakeley cut through to score under the posts, Rosie Cocker converted to make the score 7-17.
Harwich rounded off the scoring when Sophia Tricker made a break off an Owl scrum, her pass to Lillie Barnett made good ground and when Barnett passed to Lauren Fee The Owls were inside The Raven 22m, the ball quickly came back through the backs from left to right and when it finally reached Yas Amber she made the cut back inside defenders to leave a wake of trailing arms to touch down, another missed conversion meant a final scoreline of 7-22.
A couple of weeks rest now for The Owls before their next home game on 6th October against a strong Stanford team.
