The Owls faced their London opponents in the 3rd round of the Junior Cup in windy conditions at Low Road.

The visitors soon had Harwich under pressure and spent the first ten minutes camped in the home side’s half of the field. Good defensive work by the home team kept the visitors at bay and slowly began to gain some ascendency in a attack. Powerful runs from Mimi Montgomery, Becki Hare and Naomi Dobner put the visitors under pressure but a combination of poor handling and indiscipline by the Owls limited their advances

Hammersmith & Fulham continued to threaten. Their number 8 produced some powerful runs and their inside centre also showed great speed and elusiveness but good tackling by Sian Fahie and Lucie Gibson halted their progress. Harwich prop Tasha Bray made a couple of good runs but again the home side lost possession through conceding penalties.

The Owls continued to press and centre Kimberley Hutchins made a great break weaving through the visiting defence. With only Hammersmith’s full back to beat, Hutchins failed to round her and Harwich again conceded a penalty at the breakdown to allow the visitors to relieve the pressure. Half time arrived with no scores in a highly competitive match.

The second half did not start well for the home side. Montgomery was yellow carded because of the number of penalties conceded by the Owls and this was shortly followed by Fahie receiving similar treatment for an infringement at the breakdown. Down to thirteen players, the home side struggled to keep the visitors out as the Londoners crossed the line twice for tries one of which they converted.
Down 0 - 12 Harwich really took the game to Hammersmith and had them under some pressure. A run from Montgomery saw the ball recycled quickly and good passing saw the ball get to winger Emily Swain who shrugged of two defenders to stretch over the try line for her first try for the Owls. With the conversion missed Harwich continued to attack and Gibson made a great break from the visitors’ 10 metre line only to be stopped on the line where she unfortunately lost control of the ball in attempting to score the try. Soon after this Hutchins did score. This time she used some good footwork to round the fullback to score a good try. Although the conversion was missed the Owls still had the visitors on the back foot. Harwich prop Di Woods made two great runs. The second run saw Woods show an amazing turn of speed as she galloped 60 metres leaving defenders in her wake. Unfortunately she was unable to run over the full back and the attack petered out.

Hammersmith again started to threaten and with only a few minutes left on the clock their inside centre cut a superb running line and broke through a couple of tackles to score the winning try.
