Harwich & Dovercourt Owls kicked of 2015 in style.

Despite a four week layoff, Harwich started well against a strong wind. Within two minutes, Yas Amber received the ball from a turnover at a scrum and sprinted in for a try from 40 yards out. It only took another few minutes before the home team were celebrating again, this time from a half break by Annalise Allan who released Kimberley Hutchins to burst through a couple of tackles before running in a try from the halfway line. Allan was next to score with a fine elusive run, weaving her way through the visiting defence.

The home team was now playing with great confidence and their defence held the Thurrock attacks well until a long kick from the visitors put the Owls under pressure and they conceded a penalty just short of the try line. Quickly taken it caught the Owls’ defence napping and Thurrock crashed over for a try. After this minor setback, it was all Harwich. Sophia Tricker scored an excellent try from the back of a scrum and Hutchin’s speed and power proved too much for the visitors as she ran in another try to give the Owls a 29 -5 halftime lead.

The second half saw the home team continue to dominate the game. Powerful running from forwards Naomi Dobner, Abi Cutts and Tasha Bray kept the visiting pack tied in to free off the Harwich speedy backs who were always a threat. When the visitors did put some attacks together they were soon stopped by some strong tackling from the Owls. Harwich scored five more tries in the second half. Perhaps the pick of these tries was from Amber, who put in a thunderous clearance kick from inside her own 22. With the wind behind it the ball crossed the opposition try line but she had out sprinted everyone to touch down for the try. Hutchins added two more to her try tally as did Allan to hers. She also converted six of the ten tries.

It was a great performance from the Owls with forwards and backs combining well throughout the game to keep pressure on the Thurrock team.
