In their drive for promotion Harwich secured their first win at Southwold for many years.

In a fierce cold wind Harwich dominated this game from start to finish. Indeed, within 3 minutes Harwich had points on the board when Sam Male converted a difficult penalty. Five minutes later Harwich extended their lead when from a lineout Jack Cairns won the ball and fed it to Simon Palmer who made one of his driving runs. He passed to Adrian Dalby who beat two players before scoring in the corner. At 8-0 up Harwich were running the game.

The little pressure Southwold did mount was soon extinguished by the rampant Harwich side. In the 20th minute Southwold’s attack was broken up by Kyle Hutchins in his own 22. His break and pass to Joe Francis led to Sam Male finishing well in the corner to put Harwich 13-0 up. There was no respite for Southwold as a few minutes later Jack Cairns again won the ball on the ball on the half way line and passed to Nick Faliveno who ran past 5 players to score. With the try converted Harwich were 20-0 up.

Southwold mounted some resistance, by using their big forward pack, and managed to limit the game to the middle of the park for the rest of the half as Harwich sought out the fourth and bonus point try.

The second half saw Harwich taking control right from the start and scoring the all important fourth try. From a scrum in the Southwold half Kyle Hutchins won the ball and ran in a try from 25 metres out to score under the posts. Sam Male duly converted to put Harwich 27-0 up with a bonus point and the game in the bag. But Southwold were not done and replied soon after with a try of their own.

Typically for this Harwich side they surged back straight from the kick off. Kyle Hutchins won the ball which was passed along the line for Jay Hatcher to score in the corner. Harwich were now 32-8 up. Although Southwold were reduced to 14 men through injuries they still managed to score another try but it wasn’t long before Harwich snapped back.

A superb catch, run and presentation of the ball by Sam Male led to Joe Francis running in a try by the posts and just before the end Rob Simkins won the ball on the halfway line and beat the entire Southwold defence for speed before scoring under the posts. With a 44-13 win under their belts in difficult conditions against what has been a bogey side in the past the Harwich team still sit secure at third place in the league.

This week Harwich are at home to Norwich Crusaders. Kick off is 2.15.
